Kozhikode Aboobacker, one of the most celebrated composers in the Mappila music tradition, has passed away at the age of 80. Known among Malayalis as the ‘Sultan of Mappila Songs’, he leaves behind a vast musical legacy.As reported by Mathrubhumi, Aboobacker had been undergoing treatment for nearly two months after suffering a stroke. His dedication to music remained intact despite his deteriorating health. Just two days before he became bedridden, he was reportedly composing a new tune while sitting on the veranda of his home.

A birthday story involving Vijay Yesudas

In a 2022 conversation with Manorama Online, Aboobacker recalled an incident involving a young Vijay Yesudas. The episode took place on one of Vijay Yesudas’s birthdays.Vijay Yesudas was busy preparing the family home for an evening gathering. His classmates and teachers were expected to arrive for the celebration. Meanwhile, K J Yesudas was working upstairs in his recording studio.The veteran singer was recording a Mappila song at the time. One portion required the voice of a child. K J Yesudas then called his son and asked Aboobacker to teach him the section. “Vijay will sing that part. Please teach it to him.”

Aboobacker helps young Vijay Yesudas

The unexpected recording assignment left young Vijay Yesudas concerned. He was already occupied with preparations for his birthday and apparently did not want to spend too much time away from them.Aboobacker reassured him and offered to help with the remaining preparations. He then taught Vijay Yesudas the required portion of the song.“Learn the song quickly and sing it… I’ll help with the decorations too.”With Aboobacker’s guidance, Vijay Yesudas prepared for the recording. He subsequently delivered his portion in the very first take.

K J Yesudas was pleasantly surprised

The recording acquired a special significance when K J Yesudas heard it later that night. After the birthday activities had ended, he listened to the young Vijay Yesudas’s performance alongside Aboobacker.The legendary singer was reportedly surprised by how beautifully his son had rendered the passage. His reaction captured the unexpected nature of the moment. “Can my son sing this beautifully?”The recording eventually became part of “Ummaye Chodichu Ponnumol Karayalle…”. Released by Tharangini Music, the song went on to become a major hit.

Aboobacker’s enduring musical legacy

Kozhikode Aboobacker composed more than 3,000 melodies during his long career. Among his popular works are “Karayanum Parayanum Manamthurannirikkanum”, sung by K J Yesudas, and “Yatheeminathan Nee”, performed by K S Chithra. His contribution to Mappila music extended across decades.
