Roger Federer became emotional several times during his induction speech at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport on Saturday, reflecting on his career, family and the people who helped him along the way.The 45-year-old Swiss great, who won 20 Grand Slam singles titles, was inducted alongside former player and broadcaster Mary Carillo.Federer was introduced by his wife, Mirka, and admitted that following her speech would be difficult.“Oh man,” were the first words from the first man ever to win 20 Grand Slam singles titles. “This is very high level and a tough act to follow.”He later joked: “I don’t know if you have been practicing secretly” before praising Mirka.During his nearly 30-minute speech, Federer became emotional while remembering childhood hero Stefan Edberg, longtime coach Severin Luthi and, most importantly, Mirka.Watch:“Now the Mirka part,” he said, pausing before breaking into tears. “Oh gosh, this such a mess.”As he tried to regain his composure, Federer told the audience, “I need tissues and sunglasses, everything to protect me right now.”
A career filled with historic achievements
Federer finished his speech by thanking the ball boys and encouraging future players to continue pushing tennis forward. His remarkable career included eight Wimbledon titles, six Australian Opens and one French Open, making him one of only eight men to complete a career Grand Slam.“I’m thrilled to have made the journey here,” he said. “It’s amazing to see yourself in a place like this. To immerse yourself in the history of the sport means a lot to me.”Carillo, inducted as a contributor, was also deeply moved by the honour.King said: “She has earned her spot in sports journalism and she has earned her spot in Newport.”Carillo added: “To walk through these gates here in the company of you people, that was beyond my dreams.”
